On Friday, the health department of Gurugram started a house-to-house screening process to detect leprosy cases in people as soon as possible and help in eradicating the illness. With the assistance of certified social health activists (ASHA) and auxiliary nursing midwives, the exercise will last for 14 days.

The initiative started after the health departments data revealed new leprosy cases in six Haryana districts last year,  including 60 active cases in Panipat, 58 in Faridabad, 30 cases in Gurugram while Ambala, Karnal and Jhajjar reporting 19,10 and 8 cases respectively.

Experts stated that leprosy mostly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, upper respiratory tract mucosa, and eyes and could be effectively treated using multidrug therapy.
